The National Football League (NFL) suffered a severe ratings drop in the 2017 season opener as compared to the 2016 season opener. Some estimate the drop at as much as 14%. Speculations are abundant as to the reasoning behind it. Some say it’s because of Hurricane Irma coverage dominating the news. Which could be a reasonable explanation in theory… but it does not take into account what was happening in 2016 which was the chaotic Presidential campaign between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump.
Some people have just decided to claim victory in the NFL ratings drop due to their side of the coin when it comes to the drama surrounding former quarterback Colin Kaepernick. Many people are against what he did and the trend he sparked which is kneeling before the national anthem in “protest” of injustice against black men and/or “people of color.” These acts are seen as unpatriotic and anti-American. Even though Kaepernick is not in the league, many of his copycats still are and that sense of anti-patriotism is turning many fans of the game off completely.
Then you have those who support Kaepernick and his copycats. They are boycotting the NFL due to Kaepernick not being employed by the league. Many of them think the reason why he is not in the league is because he “took a stand for black people.” They often ignore the business side of the NFL. It is a pure meritocracy. The truth is that Kaepernick is not that good of a quarterback and the drama he brings along makes him that much more of a person for any NFL owner and GM to avoid.
At the end of the day, both sides of the coin are celebrating the ratings drop to a certain extent. But those who support Kaepernick should not be celebrating if they believe in what he purports himself to stand for, which is the upliftment of black men. 70% of the NFL is comprised of black men, many of whom are millionaires. Not only do they take care of themselves and their immediate family, they also often take care of many other people outside of their household who tend to be majority black. So why chip away at the money that these black men make? Prime example of irrational behavior brought on by groupthink.

Only One Player Sat for Anthem During NFL Season Opener — He Should Hear What These Vets Have to Say

However, another game another controversy.
You can add one more national anthem protest to the long list of protests. It turns out that one player of the Kansas City Chiefs didn’t stand up during the national anthem to display his objection.
On Thursday, cornerback Marcus Peters was the only one who had the guts to protest during the national anthem during the season opener. Unlike the other players on the roster and coaches of the Chiefs and Patriots, Marcus Peters was caught sitting in his chair during the national anthem.
The cornerback of the Kansas City Chiefs tweeted right before the game:
Stand for what you stand in. If you see the potential for good, speak up. Don’t be Quiet. @Fam1stfam #adidasPharrellWilliams
However, two war veterans don’t like this kind of disrespectful behavior to remain seated during the national anthem. Josh Ghering was a Marine for 12 long years and fought in Iraq and in Afghanistan. For three years he worked as a drill instructor for the US Army.
Independent Journal Review asked Josh Ghering how is he feeling about the players protesting the flag that he bled for. The war veteran replied: “I didn’t see that as a sign of disrespect to me. I saw that as a sign of disrespect to my predecessors and to my brothers and sisters that came home in a flag draped coffin from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. I respect his right to free speech, but I don’t agree/approve of what he is doing.”
Another veteran joined the discussion, Steve B. – C Co. & HHC 2nd Ranger Battalion, 12 years of law enforcement: Patrol, SWAT.
When Steve was asked what kind of emotions these national anthem protests bring into his heart, he replied:
“I would make each one of the disrespectful players participate in a police academy session with role players and simulation weapons. I would have them all meet with Gold Star families.
I would tell them how their uneducated and disrespectful actions, particularly in a time of war, give aid and comfort and encouragement to our enemies.
I would specifically call Kaepernick out for his lack of truthful information, his lack of taking action (you don’t see him patrolling Chicago), and that this is just a manipulative attempt to stay relevant, create drama and claim he is a victim.”
This trend started with Colin Kaepernick and look where it got him, on the street with no job offers.
